Artist of the Week - Week of 6 March 2023
Congratulations to our Artist of the Week, Bryan A. - 6th Grade
One of the most difficult thinks to accomplish as a young artist is the ability to draw what you see. In this project, we took on the task of drawing from observation - still life. I observed Bryan taking the time to look at the plant before starting to sketch. This is an important exercise because we tend to just start drawing without looking -- because in this case we already know what the plant looks like in our mind. Bryan did a great job representing 3-d perspective and shadow. He also did an amazing job of creating a background that adds texture and a bit of surrealism to the project. Surrealism is a type of art that is magical, created by the unconscious mind.
GREAT JOB BRYAN!!

Life of Pi
7% of the world does not believe in religion. This statistic indicates that religion is essential to the majaority of people because it can help an individual find comfort, meaning and purpose in life. This is apparent in Yann Martel's novel, "Life of Pi," which follows the journey of a pious, young Indian man named Pi, who finds himself lost at sea with a Bengal Tiger. In the novel, an observable theme is that religion can be utilized as an important tool in life. For example, religion can be used to find someone's purpose, and it can be also used to face a tough circumstance.
Firstly, religion can be used to find purpose in life. Pi finds purpose in his faith, which provides him with a sense of connection to the world around him. He states, "I began to see that the world is not divided into good and bad people, but into people who have been damaged and those who are living their lives after the damage has been done." (Page 276, Pi). This quote demonstrates how Pi's faith allows him to see the world in a more nuanced way, recognizing the struggles and challenges that individuals face, and helping him find compassion and understanding for others. Pi's faith helps him find purpose in making a positive impact on the world, no matter how small. Religion can also help individuals find purpose by providing them with a sense of community and belonging. Pi recognizes the importance of community when he says, "Faith in God is an opening up, a letting go, a deep trust, a free act of love - but sometimes it was so hard to love." (Page 48, Pi).This quote highlights how religion can provide individuals with a sense of connection to others who share their beliefs, and how this community can offer support, guidance and encouragement.
Secondly, religion can be used to face tough circumstances. While being stranded at sea, Pi used prayer and meditation to keep himsel sensible. He said, "I was to weak to fight. I gave it to the voice of prayer." (Page 121, Pi). This quote shows how Pi used religion to find hope in a dire situation. Religion also provided Pi with a sense of morality and ethics, which helped him make dcisions in line with his beliefs. Pi said, "I must not be angry with God. I must not doubt God. I must not blame God. I must think of God as a friend of life, not the destroyer of life." (Page 167, Pi). This quote demonstrates how Pi used his faith to guide his actions to keep himself on a moral path, even in the midst of uncertainty.
In conclusion, religion can be used as an essential tool in life. It can help an individual find purpose, and it can be used to overcome obstacles in life. This is shown through Pi, who overcame being stranded with a Bengal Tiger. Religion gave Pi hope and it was a great asset to his survival. It also helped Pi find his purpose in life by giving him a new perspective of the world. This message leaves us with the fact that religion is important. The novel highlights the importance of faith and the ways it can shape one's perspective and guide their actions.

Surrealist Hot Air Baloon in Outer Space
In this project, we learned about Surrealism and how dreams can make great art. We learned how to draw hot air balloons using contour lines
Walter did an outstanding job making his hot air balloon by using a variety of thick and thin lines.
What makes a great student artist is the ability to follow directions and creatively solve problems. Walter is a great artist and inspires us to do great work.
Great Job Walter!!
