There is some good news about the education of at-risk boys in our community. The De La Salle School, an intentionally small middle school serving fifty-four boys, grades five through eight, is making a positive difference in young lives. At a crucial stage in their growth, The De La Salle School involves them as a community of learners in a faith based environment infused with an emphasis on respect, responsibility, leadership, and service. |
Our school is open to students of all faiths and cultures, and admission is based on financial need as well as academic considerations. We follow the tradition of our namesake, John Baptist De La Salle, founder of the Christian Brothers and patron saint of teachers in providing a quality scholarship school for parents who desire an option in education but cannot afford a choice. In the small, nurturing environment of The De La Salle School, young men are encouraged to deepen their faith, excel academically, become leaders, serve others, develop social skills, and grow in responsibility. |
Class size averages fifteen students. Our school is not tuition-driven; however each parent is expected to contribute at least $75 monthly towards his/her son’s education. As a private independent school The De La Salle School depends almost entirely upon individual philanthropy, corporate contributions, and foundation grants to cover the cost of educating each student. We have been blessed with generous benefactors and have completed each of our first four years in the black and are building an endowment fund. |
The De La Salle School has celebrated two graduations, the first in June of 2006 and again in June 2007. Consequently, 25 alumni of The De La Salle School are now enrolled in seven Catholic and five public high schools. They are our extended student family; still part of the flock, but now in a different part of the pasture. We monitor and assist our alumni and their families through our Graduate Support Program by serving as a resource as they continue their educational journey through high school and college. |

History |
|
|
| |
Our particular school was founded in 2002, and we are pleased to have received our absolute charter from the New York State Department of Education following three years of probationary status. We rent space from Our Holy Redeemer parish in the building that once housed their parish elementary school. The De La Salle School is a member of the Lasallian Association of Miguel Schools and the NativityMiguel Network of Schools (www.NativityMiguel.org). The history of the Miguel model of schools dates from 1993 in Providence, Rhode Island where the first Miguel school was founded to give hope to an economically depressed, ethnically diverse community there. The schools in the Miguel network provide a faith-based and human education in the Catholic tradition. They are distinguished by an innovative, quality education. A clientele who could not afford a private school education now has that opportunity. A youngster who might not succeed in a large, public school environment now has the option of a more personalized setting. |

The De La Salle School in 2008 – 2009 has
a total enrollment of 63 young men. There are 15 students in
grade five, 16 in grade six, 17 in grade seven, and 15 in
grade eight. Approximately 77 percent qualify for free or
reduced price federal lunch. Ethnically we have
approximately 60 percent Latino, 30 percent African
American, and 10 percent mixed. Most students are Freeport
residents (45 percent) and the next highest number comes
from Hempstead (26 percent). A total of eight public school
districts are represented by our student body -- Freeport,
Hempstead, Roosevelt, Elmont, Uniondale, Baldwin, Rosedale,
and Westbury. Almost all our students are immigrants or
first generation citizens of the United States. We provide a
choice in education for those who otherwise could not afford
a choice. Young men at risk of becoming unfortunate
statistics in our society are becoming caring citizens
thanks to the intervention of The De La Salle School. |
